Being an architect was in my DNA. My father was a custom home builder, and I worked for him summers or whenever possible. There, I learned every trade related to home building. I always admired the interesting homes he built and I gravitated towards the design aspects of building.
I went on to study architecture at the NY Institute of Technology, and the American Academy in Rome, Italy. Along the way, I was intrigued by the work of Paul Rudolph, a modernist master and the dean at Yale. After graduation I camped out in front of Paul Rudolph's office in Manhattan for three days until he agreed to take a look at my portfolio, he hired me that day. I have been a partner at Zachary Hagemann Architects for over 25 years.
